Chapter Nine

Friday afternoon, her cell phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Marie? It’s Stan Acker from Acker, Tomlinson and Roberts. How are you doing today?”

Marie sat back in her office chair. “Stan. I’m doing great, thank you. I’ve been waiting to hear from you. I have my camera crew and sound guys on standby, and we’re ready to start filming. I need to know what dates to block off for the interview.”

Stan hesitated. “Um, Marie, that’s what I called to talk to you about. We’ve decided to go with another producer on this project.”

“What?” She sat up straight. “Why?”

“Well, the details of his contract were more favorable, as were the guaranteed distribution outlets and financial backers.”

Her heart sank as her deal slipped away. “Well, what kind of details are we talking about? I’m willing to negotiate—”

“I’m sorry, Marie, but we’ve already signed the other contract. Thanks for your interest.” Marie was met with silence on the other end of the phone as Stan hung up.

She slammed her hands down on her desk. “Dammit!” Angry tears burned hot as she tried to blink them away. A knock at her door startled her, and Theresa peeked her head in. “Marie, Carlos wants to know if—”

“Not now!” Marie sharply turned her head, refusing to look at her. She heard the door close as Theresa left.

Facing the window, she watched as busy people scurried down the street. A few lingered in front of the giant picture window, hoping to catch a glimpse of a newscaster, but with the 5:00 broadcast now over, all they would see was the crew setting up for the late evening news. Marie wiped away the tears that had escaped. The whistleblower project was going to be the key to taking her career to the next level. She had been working on it for almost a year. And now, in the span of less than five minutes, the production slipped through her fingers.

“Dammit,” she whispered.

Who was this other producer? She knew everyone in the business in Chicago. If the person were local, she’d find him. And then kick his ass. The thought of exacting violence against the person made Marie feel a little bit better. She sighed and rubbed her fingers over her forehead. She felt a headache approaching, and her eyes still stung. All she wanted to do was go home, curl up with a glass of wine or three and forget about the whole disappointing mess.

She twirled around in her chair and began to shut down her computer and gather her things. Her cell phone’s ring startled her, and she glanced at the number. “Shit, I forgot,” she muttered. “Not tonight. I can’t do this tonight.” She answered the phone with the intention of getting rid of him quickly. “Hey, Vince.”

“Hey. I hope you like seafood because I have reservations at—”

“I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to cancel.”

“Why?”

Her emotions—sadness, disappointment, anger—rose to the surface. She swallowed hard to keep them at bay. “I have to… Something came up.” Her voice cracked, releasing a new floodgate of silent tears.
